In memory
Fans, coaches and players observed a moment of silence before the game in honor of former Bears Coach Charlie Spoonhour. Spoonhour, 72, died Wednesday at his home in North Carolina. He coached the Bears from 1983-92 and helped usher the program from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. He went 197-81 with five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
He also coached at Saint Louis and UNLV, compiling a record of 373-202 in 19 seasons as a Division I Coach. In recent years he was an analyst for MVC television network games.
He is from Mulberry. Spoonhour is survived by his wife, Vicki, and sons Jay and Stephen. Jay Spoonhour is Coach at Moberly (Mo.) Area Community College.
Swishes feel good
WSU needed a shooter to step up after it went 7 of 25 from three-point range in Saturday’s loss at Drake.
Somebody was due to get hot, and Ben Smith was that somebody. In four previous games, Smith went 1 for 12 from three-point range.
Wednesday, he went 5 for 9.
“It felt real good,” Smith said. “My coaches and teammates always try to encourage me that I can shoot. You’ve just got to have that confidence.”
Teammate David Kyles could use some of that confidence. He missed all four of his threes after missing eight at Drake.
“I’d like DK to make a shot,” WSU Coach Gregg Marshall said. “I need him to make a shot. I’m going to continue to go with him, when he’s in there. If he’s in, that’s what he’s got to do, because that’s what he does.”
Worth noting
MSU wears gray jerseys at home, forcing WSU to wear yellow Wednesday. The Bears are 0-3 in the gray this season.…The Shockers won at JQH Arena for the second time in three seasons.… Smith’s 21 points came up one short of his career high.… WSU’s Carl Hall came off the bench for the first time since Nov. 18 against Alabama.
