Verizon’s New $2 Fee Sparks Negative Reaction from Chicago Customers

Chicago – Lately it seems like the price for almost everything is going up. That is, except our paychecks.

The cost of electricity and parking cars in downtown Chicago are just the start. Then there’s all the new fees — like paying to check a suitcase on a flight.

Cell phone company Verizon is about to start charging a $2 fee to people who pay their bills a certain way.

Starting Jan. 15, customers who pay individual bills via the phone or online with a credit or debit card will be hit with the fee. Other payment methods will stay free, like using your bank’s website or writing a regular check.

Experts in the technology field said the Verizon fee may be targeted at a segment of customers who cost the company extra money to serve.

Credit and debit cards cost more money to process than other methods, and might be used often by people who are late in paying their bills.

A tech reporter at Crain’s Chicago business said firms have gotten very good at figuring out which customers are its most – and least – profitable.

But consumers may have more power than they know, over the companies they pay.

Reports in the media, including internet blogs, reflect badly on the company. Tech consultant Alex Goldfayn said people who call to complain do make a difference.

“If there’s enough outcry,” Goldfayn said, “they will pull the fee back.”
