Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service now in Birmingham metro

Birmingham metro area Verizon Wireless customers can now tap into the company’s new 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, starting today.

Verizon said the new network has digital speeds 10 times faster than before. It’s available in Alabaster, Adamsville, Bessemer, Birmingham, Calera, Cullman, Chelsea, Cordova, Center Point, Clay, Fultondale, Gardendale, Hanceville, Hoover, Homewood, Harpersville, Helena, Irondale, Jasper, Kimberly, Leeds, Mountain Brook, Moody, Mulga, Sumiton, Pelham, Pleasant Grove, Oak Grove, Pinson, Palmerdale, Remlap, Springville, Short Creek, Trussville, Tarrant and Vestavia.

“We are proud to bring the largest 4G LTE network in the nation to Birmingham and help lead residents, small businesses and local government into the next generation of wireless connectivity and communication,” said Lynn Carlson, executive network director for Verizon’s Georgia/Alabama region. “Our 4G LTE network is enabling our customers to connect faster and more fully with each other and those outside our community.”

The network went active in 22 cities and was expanded in four others today. By Nov. 17, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will cover 178 cities.

Verizon said it is working with rural communications companies to collaboratively build and operate a 4G LTE network in those areas using the tower and backhaul assets of the rural company and Verizon’s core 4G LTE equipment and frequency spectrum.

When customers move outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected while traveling.
