POUGHKEEPSIE — Unionized Verizon employees marching in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement will cross into the mid-Hudson Valley this weekend, making stops in Kingston and Poughkeepsie on their eight-day trip to New York City.
Calling themselves “March for the 99%,” members of the Communications Workers of America say they’re marching to highlight Verizon and Verizon Wireless’ attempt to slash benefits for workers and shine a light on corporate greed.
The union members began their march Thursday in Albany. They plan to rally at 5 p.m. Saturday near the Verizon Wireless Store at 1200 Ulster Ave.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, the marchers plan to rally again at the Kingston Verizon store, then leave for Poughkeepsie and join with Occupy Poughkeepsie protesters at about 1 p.m. near Church and Market streets.
There, marchers hope to get support from CWA members who work at Vassar College.
Beth Soto, coordinator for the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation, said that there will be about 25 marchers from Albany, but they hope to pick up more as the weekend progresses.
Ultimately, the marchers plan to reach Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan by Nov. 17 — the two-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement and a day where other labor organizations plan to host rallies.
