Verizon to Sell Droid 4 in Coming Weeks

Motorola plans to begin selling the Droid 4, with a QWERTY keyboard, for Verizon in the next few weeks, as the manufacturer officially unveils the follow-up to the Droid 3.

The Droid 4 will run on Verizon’s LTE network and feature a 1.2-gigahertz dual-core processor, a 4-inch qHD display, an 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p video capture and 16-gigabytes of internal storage.

The device will launch in the next few weeks and run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.

Motorola’s Droid 4 joins an impressive catalog of LTE capable phones on Verizon’s network. The Motorola Razr, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound share the spotlight in the carrier’s catalog, but the Droid 4 has one feature that sets its apart. The device is one of the best and only options for users looking for a high-end device with a QWERTY keyboard.

An announcement for the Droid 4 seemed imminent after reports surfaced that Verizon would stop carrying the Droid 3 by the end of January. The Droid line has produced some of the best-selling phones on Verizon’s network, and the Droid 4 will likely continue that trend with technology that is up to the standards of today’s top devices.

The Droid 4 also works with Motorola’s new line of accessories. Customers can use the device with the company’s 10 or 14-inch lapdocks, effectively turning the handset into a netbook for users who want the option.

The Droid 4 has all the tools to become one of the top devices on Verizon’s network, but customers eager to get their hands on an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich device may want to look elsewhere. Motorola said the handset will get a software upgrade to ICS, but analysts believe it could take months to transform the company’s heavy user interface into an ICS-friendly package.

Although the Droid 4 could end up stuck with Gingerbread a bit longer than its competition, the device’s features and specs make it one of the most impressive handsets on the market.
