Verizon to sell Boulder’s Agloves online, in stores

Boulder-based Agloves, a maker of touchscreen-friendly gloves, recently inked a contract with Verizon Wireless that will put the silver-threaded hand coverings on the carrier’s webstore and available to its more than 2,200 shops nationwide.

As a result of the deal, Verizon becomes the first brick-and-mortar retail outlet in the United States to carry Agloves’ products, which have been sold online and to European Union countries since the local company’s founding in 2010.

Agloves — a name that’s a play off silver’s chemical symbol of Ag — were distributed to select Verizon stores in the Northeast and Midwest late last week and will be sold on Verizon’s website starting Friday, said Jenny Weaver, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman. Agloves also will be available via direct fulfillment — and sent to stores to fulfill sales requests placed by customers, she said.

For Agloves, pairing up with Verizon could serve as a springboard for the company’s plans to secure a leadership position in a newly created sector within the computer accessories industry, said Jennifer Spencer, Agloves’ co-founder and chief executive officer.

“(Verizon) definitely is a known partner,” she said. “We think it’s going to have a really big impact.”

Spencer said she anticipates Agloves will secure similar deals with other wireless carriers in the coming months.

Spencer already has witnessed the products’ popularity explode online through Agloves.com and Amazon.com and in Europe, where Agloves are sold in O2 and Vodafone stores, Apple resellers and Staples locations. The young Agloves expects to pump out 300,000 gloves this season, she said.

“Already this year, we’ve grown almost 20 times above last year,” she said.

In addition to meeting the growing demand and serving the current client base, Agloves officials also are eyeing new markets — from supplying frozen foods workers to scientists in Antarctica — to even out any seasonality concerns, she said.

Agloves’ seven-person headquarters operations are based in Boulder. The company has manufacturing operations in China and additional warehouse and shipping operations in Fort Collins and Amsterdam.
