Verizon to introduce 4G service in Evansville market next month – Evansville Courier




Verizon Wireless plans to launch its 4G network in the Evansville area Oct. 20, the company reported Tuesday.

The main advantage of 4G service, said Verizon spokeswoman Michelle Gilbert, is that it is up to 10 times faster than the company’s current 3G service.

Those faster speeds, Gilbert said, will make it easier to upload and download large files, watch movies and participate in video conferences via wireless devices.

As a means of comparison, “it would be the same as taking a 14-hour flight and condensing it into 80 minutes. That’s how fast it is,” she said.

Users of Verizon’s 4G service, the company said, should be able to download 5-12 megabits per second and upload 2-5 megabits per second.

Only customers with 4G-capable devices will be able to access the 4G network, Gilbert said. Verizon offers 12 such devices, including smartphones, tablets, notebooks, netbooks, hotspots and modems.

Verizon’s Evansville market includes nearby towns such as Boonville, Jasper and Henderson, Ky. A number of other Indiana markets, including Bedford, Bloomington, Mitchell and Terre Haute will also launch on the same day. Verizon already rolled out 4G service to 143 other U.S. cities since it launched the network in December.

Verizon will continue to operate its 3G network alongside the 4G network. The 3G network will serve Verizon customers with non-4G devices, and it will also serve as a backup network for 4G-capable devices operating in areas where 4G service is not available.

According to wireless coverage maps, Verizon is the first wireless provider to launch 4G service locally. Maps available on the websites of ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint do not show their 4G coverage as being available in the Evansville area.
