Verizon to bring 4G LTE network to Richmond and Hampton in Virginia on 20 October

US wireless communications service provider Verizon Wireless announced yesterday that it is launching its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in two new areas of Virginia.

The company will bring its 4G LTE network to Richmond and Hampton in Virginia on 20 October 2011.

Currently, Verizon’s 4G LTE network is available in northern Virginia and Blacksburg, Virginia, in addition to 143 other cities across the US, with more activations planned in 2011, including Roanoke, Virginia by year’s end.

With the announced expansion, Verizon customers in the Greater Richmond and the Hampton Roads communities of Norfolk, Newport News and Virginia Beach with 4G LTE devices will be able to take advantage of the power of the 4G LTE network with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network.

Also, customers in the Greater Richmond and Hampton Roads areas can choose from 12 devices on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network including the latest smart phones, Pantech Breakout and DROID BIONIC by Motorola,.

Verizon introduced its 4G LTE network on 5 December 2010, covering over 110 million Americans, and has reportedly already expanded to cover more than half the US population. The company said that it will continue to rapidly expand its 4G LTE network and is on course to cover more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) (Nasdaq: VZ) and Vodafone (LSE: VOD) (Nasdaq: VOD).
