Verizon supports coalition against domestic violence
We both agreed that domestic violence is one of those ugly issues people don’t like to talk about, but too often incidences occur where the victim works, disrupting morale and affecting productivity.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that domestic violence cost companies more the $8 billion annually in health care, absenteeism, lost productivity and employee turnover. Not to mention the wages victims lose when they miss work.
October is Domestic Violence Month, and Verizon is marking the occasion by partnering with the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault to raise awareness of the problem and promote available resources for prevention and services for victims.
“We’re a technology company that specializes in connecting people. It’s a great opportunity to help provide an avenue for the silent victim or witness, to help those who need a lifeline,” said Christopher Harrell, associate director of business sales for Oklahoma.
Through the company’s Hopeline program, no-longer-used phones that potentially could be refurbished or sold are collected at Verizon outlets or designated organizations and 100 percent of the proceeds go to domestic violence awareness and prevention organizations. The company also provides grants to organizations to help them provide wireless products and services to survivors.
