Verizon store opens in south Salisbury

SALISBURY — A geographical slice of South Salisbury Boulevard outside the municipal limits of both Salisbury and Fruitland has a new Verizon store — Verizon Wireless-Cellular Sales/Authorized Retailer.

The store leads the nation among authorized retailers for Verizon Wireless and opened Oct. 11 with six selling stations for customer convenience, said Liz Melloy, national leasing manager at Cellular Sales of Knoxville.

Cellular Sales has a multiple-year lease on the 1,566 square-foot retail space, creating a new shopping option for wireless communication technology on the southern edge of Salisbury and just north of the Fruitland incorporated limits.

The number of employees could fluctuate, she said. “Staffing at the store varies at different times of the day, and different days of the week,” Melloy said. “There are six selling stations at the locations that can be utilized.”

The opening coincides with the holiday shopping season of November and December, for which the National Retail Federation forecasts an overall 2.8 percent increase in sales, to $465.6 billion.

Grabbing a smartphone before Christmas gives consumers an additional method to shop. Half of Americans with a smartphone will use them to research products, compare prices and get information as store hours and locations, according to an NRF survey. Some 16 percent of them will use a smartphone to make a purchase, says the NRF.

Cellular Sales, the operator of wireless phone stores for Verizon Wireless in the South, Midwest and Atlantic regions, has 470 Verizon Wireless retail stores in 23 states.

The new South Salisbury Boulevard store is among eight Verizon Wireless retail stores opened by Cellular Sales in Maryland in 2011, “with two more possibly opening before the end of the year,” Melloy said. Cellular Sales stores that came on line this year include locations in Easton and Cambridge, Melloy said, adding that more are on the way.

“They are in the process of building out six more locations that will be opening in early 2012,” she said, but did not name specific locations.
