Verizon restoring 4G service after 2nd outage this month

Verizon Wireless said its fourth-generation data network wasn’t operating properly Wednesday morning, marking the second time this month and third this year that the mobile broadband service was down.

“4G LTE service is returning to normal,” the company said in a statement. “Company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours.”

Verizon Wireless has taken an early lead in offering 4G service, expanding it to cover about 200 million Americans, nearly triple rival ATT Inc.’s reach. The speedier network has helped Verizon Wireless attract new contract customers on higher-priced devices.

The carrier reported similar 4G outages earlier this month and in April when some customers using 4G phones, such as the HTC Thunderbolt, could achieve only 3G or slower download speeds. In both instances, Verizon Wireless said customers could make calls and send text messages and service was restored within about a day.

Verizon Wireless, co-owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, didn’t say how many of its customers were affected or where. A spokesman didn’t say what had been causing the outages.
