Verizon purchasing portion of Plateau Wireless – Portales News

Verizon is purchasing a portion of Plateau Wireless but the sale will not affect Plateau customers in Curry, Roosevelt or Quay counties.

Plateau CEO Tom Phelps said Saturday that Verizon is purchasing the southwest New Mexico quadrant, which includes portions of Roswell, Carlsbad, Artesia, and Hobbs and Ruidoso.

Phelps said the sale won’t affect customers in Clovis, Portales, Tucumcari or portions of west Texas. Phelps said selling a piece of the business gives Plateau more cash to invest in upgrading services such as high-speed wireless.

“It was a business decision,” Phelps said. “We looked at the offer and it just made perfect sense.”

Terms of the purchase would not be disclosed and the transaction is subject to FCC approval, which is expected mid-year.

The purchase includes Plateau Wireless’ Cellular customers, and related operations in the southeastern New Mexico market. The licenses and the operating assets being acquired cover a rural population of 259,000 and approximately 26,100 square miles, including highways U.S. 285, U.S. 54 and U.S. 70.
