Add Duke University and Verizon

to those trying to figure out how to best merge health care and 21st century technology.

Verizon, through its health care practice group Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions, has worked out a multi-year deal with Duke to improve health care information technology and hopefully drive down medical costs.

Financial details of the deal were not released.

Duke will bring technical resources and personnel to the table and Verizon will add its sizeable computing infrastructure to the mix. Combined, they hope to come up with ways for people to keep better track of their own health, be that on a smart phone, a computer or even the cloud, and help doctors better track health records.

They have not announced any specific projects but said they will fall under the broad classifications of mobile health applications and consumer health care education.

“The ties between academia and technology companies run long and deep,” said Dr. Peter Tippett, vice president of Verizon Connected Healthcare Solutions, in a statement. “Leveraging Duke’s renowned research capabilities will help Verizon’s technical staff identify and deploy technologies that are needed to advance U.S. health care in a sustainable manner.”
