Verizon will flaunt a new storage technology at CES 2012 that has the potential to revolutionize mobile device users’ ability to take movies, music and photographs with them wherever they travel.
The Seagate 4G LTE Mobile Wireless Storage is a portable storage device with enough space to hold more than 300 HD movies. Its rechargeable battery should last up to five hours and it emits a Wi-Fi signal so that users of iOS and Android smartphones and tablets can access content stored on the device via Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Up to three Wi-Fi enabled gadgets can access the device simultaneously.
Seagate executive Scott Horn said in a press release that the 4G LTE storage “opens up a whole new world of possibilities for consumers to access the content they desire on the go.”
The new technology was developed in collaboration by Verizon and Seagate, a manufacturer of hard disk drives and other storage devices, along with the wireless companies SkyCross and Novatel. The project was part of Verizon’s Innovation Program, which aims to bring more life and fresh ideas to the 4G LTE ecosystem.
Verizon and Seagate say their success in breaking new mobile storage ground could lead to additional future joint ventures between the two companies, and Verizon’s collaboration program appears to be paying dividends.
The Seagate storage device could easily become a hit with consumers who rely on their smartphones and tablets for mobile entertainment but yen for easier and quicker access to wider array of options than they can store on their devices or stream from websites. At first blush and without having tested the device, longer battery life would be a welcome improvement, especially for users who want to watch multiple movies or shows during longer trips.
