Verizon: LTE data promo meant to clear 3G for iPhones

Verizon CFO says LTE promo really to help iPhone

Verizon’s doubled 4G data cap promo is as much to serve iPhone users as it is LTE Android users, CFO Fran Shammo told an investment event on Wednesday. The deal was “enticing” Android users on 3G phones to trade up to 4G so the carrier could accommodate more 3G iPhone owners. The iPhone was selling “very well” on Verizon, he said, and keeping those on other platforms on 4G made sure Verizon didn’t have to pay for an upgrade to keep 3G running smoothly.

“In order for [iPhone owners] to keep that realization of that experience, we need to make sure that I don’t have to put in any more capacity to 3G,” he said.

Expansion of LTE was also going faster so that those with 4G didn’t have to revert to 3G. The new network made it less expensive to run as a whole.

Verizon won’t give insight as to how many more iPhones it has switched on in the wake of the iPhone 4S launch until its official results in January. The network saw a drop to two million activations this summer, but that’s believed only to have been the result of a slingshot effect where some customers were waiting for the iPhone 4S. Unofficial checks have pointed to strong fall sales and that the iPhone may still be the most popular individual smartphone on the network.
