Verizon FiOS TV to come to Xbox Live next month
Verizon will be bringing voice and gesture controls to live TV using Kinect and Xbox Live next month.
The FiOS TV app for the service, which will be free for Xbox Live Gold members and subscribers to Verizon’s FiOS TV service, will be available for download next month, according to a post on the Verizon blog.
Earlier this fall, Microsoft announced that TV programming on Xbox Live would be an emphasis in coming months. Verizon says that this will be the first chance for users to watch and browse TV channels using voice and gestures via the Kinect motion controller.
“Joining forces with Microsoft and Xbox, we are breaking the boundaries between TV and gaming, and furthering the borderless lifestyle Verizon customers enjoy with our new offers and services,” said Eric Bruno, vice president of consumer and mass business product management for Verizon, in a statement.
There will initially be 26 FiOS TV channels available, depending on the customer’s TV package. Once downloaded after it becomes available next month, the FiOS TV app will show up on the Xbox Live menu, and users can watch the live streaming FiOS TV channels without the need to pay for another set-top box.
Verizon has a deal for new customers who sign up online: a triple-play offer (through Jan. 21) that bundles FiOS TV, FiOS 35/35 Mbps Internet service and Verizon voice service for $89.99 a month and a 12-month Xbox LIVE Gold Membership and copy of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary.
Also, Verizon has partnered with Machinima.com for its Gamers’ Choice Award given out during the game video site’s Inside Gaming Awards on Dec. 9. Vote between now and Dec. 8 on Facebook or on Twitter by using the #FiOSGamers hashtag to be entered in a contest to win daily prizes and a grand prize of two years of the Verizon FiOS triple-play service, a multiroom DVR, a Microsoft Kinect and 40,000 Microsoft points.
