Verizon: FiOS Build Remains in Neutral

For more than a year we’ve noted that with the exception of markets that have signed franchise obligations (New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia), Verizon’s fiber to the home FiOS build is essentially over. The company had previously stated that they wanted to ramp up user penetration in deployed markets to somewhere around 40% before continuing the build — if they continue the build at all.

Verizon’s been selling off older DSL networks, and with roughly 50% of their subscribers still on DSL, there’s absolutely no indication that’s going to change anytime soon for those users. Speaking at a conference this week new Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam again stated there’s no plans to expand FiOS further than what has been announced:

And even though McAdam insisted that Verizon will rigorously promote its FiOS video and Internet service in areas that compete with cable, the company said it doesn’t have plans to expand the expensive fiber network beyond what’s already been announced and scheduled for buildout over the next couple years.

Even in markets where Verizon has promised to continue expansion, expansion isn’t all that certain. To get a video franchise Verizon promised the city of New York they’d have every single NYC home wired by the end of 2014 — a goal that doesn’t seem likely to happen if you ask NYC borough residents who are still waiting. Many of those larger city deals include fine print that allow Verizon to buy or wiggle their way out of obligations if they’re not seeing the kind of video subscribership they’d like.
