Verizon details Android 2.3 for Samsung Droid Charge

Update to Gingerbread “coming soon!”

(Update: dated below) Verizon has officially indicated that an update to Android 2.3 will soon be available for its Samsung Droid Charge users. The carrier has posted details on the benefits of upgrading and instructions on how to do it. The actual update is “coming soon.”

Verizon has provided several reasons why it would like is customers to upgrade to version 2.3. Most are those built into Android 2.3 itself, such as the new Download Manager App, improved app and power management, and the new UI with added widgets, icons and screens. Security has also been boosted with enhanced device and SD card encryption.

The Droid Charge was officially launched last April. However, technical difficulties delayed first shipments until May. The smartphone relies on a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen and comes powered by a 1GHz Hummingbird processor. It was shipped initially with Android 2.2.

In anticipation of the December arrival of the Galaxy Nexus, Verizon has recently dropped the price of the Charge to $200 on a contract.

Update: Verizon has confirmed that the update should push out to users starting on November 29.
