Verizon chimes in for Samsung against Apple–report




Verizon has stepped into the Apple-Samsung patent fight, filing a brief that asks the court to deny Apple a preliminary injunction that would ban the sale of several Samsung devices in the states.

According to blog Foss Patents, in a filing with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, Verizon asks for formal permission to file a friend-of-the-court brief against a temporary U.S.-wide ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1
tablet and its Infuse 4G, Galaxy S 4G, and Droid Charge smartphones.

Verizon has already filed the proposed brief and the judge will probably grant the friend-of-court status, Foss reports.

Foss quotes Verizon as arguing that a ban on the Samsung devices “would hinder Verizon Wireless in developing and deploying its next generation high-speed LTE network, the job growth dependent on that network, and will undercut key public policy goals, including expansion of Americans’ access to broadband networks and faster communication with emergency personnel.”

Apple argues that Samsung’s products infringe its patents, and Samsung has fired back with its own patent-related lawsuits against Apple. Verizon, of course, offers its customers both Samsung devices and the iPhone.

A hearing on the injunction is set for October 13.
