Verizon Building Under Construction in Anchorage
Verizon Wireless confirms it’s building a new cell phone network
in Alaska, which will be anchored at a large nerve center
currently under construction in midtown Anchorage.
“We’re working on a number of fronts, building the network,
creating the distribution channels and preparing, you know, to
eventually start hiring,” said Scott Charlston, a Verizon
spokesman.
Crews leveled the midtown lot this past summer, and have been
laying the groundwork for what will soon be a switching center.
Every call and text message that gets sent over a Verizon
wireless network will be routed through the structure.
Constructing the switching center is one of the first steps
toward creating what Verizon says will be a fast new 4G wireless
network, meant to rival competitors like GCI, Alaska
Communications, and ATT.
Verizon, a newcomer to Alaska, would not say when its network
will be up and running, but that they’re very busy getting things
ready.
The switching center is almost surrounded by Alaska
Communications property, once again raising questions over
whether Verizon is perhaps positioning itself to someday take
over Alaska Communications.
Alaska Communications directed all inquiries to Verizon, which
said the speculation amounts to nothing more than a rumor.
