Verizon Bringing 26 Channels of Live TV to Xbox 360 in December

Verizon customers will soon be able to watch a selection of live television on their Xbox 360 — provided they meet certain requirements.

Verizon was among the companies that Microsoft announced it had come to an agreement with in October. Whereas others were content providers like HBO, UFC, and Syfy, Verizon (along with Comcast, the app for which is pictured above) won’t operate in the same fashion. Xbox 360 owners who are Xbox Live Gold members and subscribe to both Verizon FiOS TV and Internet services will have access to live TV right through their Xbox 360 without any additional hardware.

Not everything you can watch with your FiOS TV subscription will be available, however. Depending upon your particular TV package, 26 channels will be watchable — hardly a great number by today’s standards. This is what’s available “initially,” though, so it sounds as if the idea is to eventually add more to that lineup. Unfortunately we don’t know what channels are included among those 26.

Besides the obligatory remote control support, Kinect owners will be able to control these live TV channels with either gestures or voice. It wasn’t mentioned if you’ll be able to discover content with Kinect, a feature that had been talked about back in October.

Existing subscribers will be able to take advantage of this as soon as the Verizon app is released sometime in December. To lure in potential new customers who can’t resist the allure of watching a small number of TV channels on their gaming console, Verizon is offering a deal to new subscribers: Anyone who signs up by January 21 will be eligible for a free copy of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and a 12-month Xbox Live Gold subscription, the latter of which takes care of that particular requirement for watching live TV.

The much-anticipated fall dashboard update is scheduled for release on December 6, so don’t expect to see the Verizon support any sooner than that. The update introduces a new, Kinect-friendly dashboard design, Beacons, cloud storage for Xbox Live profiles and save games, and more. There’s no date for when content providers like HBO will be brought to Live, but we do know the UFC app was intended to be out on December 1 so that it could be used to order the UFC 140 pay-per-view on December 10.
