Verizon 4G switched on in Lincoln

Verizon Wireless opened the company’s 4G Long Term Evolution
network in Lincoln on Thursday, as scheduled, at 12:35 a.m.

The company doesn’t disclose the number of customers it has by
locale or state.

The 4G LTE network extends from Lincoln north on U.S. 77 to
Davey Road; south on U.S. 77 to Saltillo Road; east on U.S. 34 to
148th Street; and west on Interstate 80 to Emerald.

Omaha’s 4G network switched on in August, and Lincoln’s startup
provides contiguou 4G service between the cities along I-80.  Most
of Nebraska remains outside the 4G service area. Verizon Wireless,
since it acquired Alltel, is the dominant cellular phone company in
Nebraska.

Verizon Wireless said its 4G LTE network supports 16 devices.
It’s called 4G because it’s the fourth generation of cellular phone
technology. LTE refers to the radio broadband technology platform,
another step on the way to LTE Advanced.

Verizon Wireless said residents and visitors with 4G LTE devices
can now take advantage of what it calls the nation’s fastest 4G
network with speeds up to 10 times faster than Verizon Wireless’ 3G
network.

In addition, the Lincoln 4G LTE coverage extends northeast on
I-80 to Ashland, providing contiguous coverage along the interstate
between Lincoln and Omaha.

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon
Wireless says its 4G LTE users should experience average data rates
of 5 to 12 megabits per second on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on
the uplink.

Spokeswoman Karen Smith said she’s had bloggers tell her their
4G operates faster than a hard-wired computer at home.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, the
devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network,
enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast, the
company said.

The company plans to continue expanding its 4G LTE network to
its entire 3G coverage area by the end of 2013.
