Verizon 4G in Kansas City next month

Verizon Wireless will bring its high-speed cellphone service to Kansas City in November, the company announced Monday.

The company’s 4G, or fourth generation, service has been rolling out across the nation. When it arrives in Kansas City on Nov. 17, the company said in a news release, the 4G service will be available in 178 American cities.

Verizon uses LTE, or long term evolution, for its 4G service. ATT, which has cranked up 4G service in far fewer markets, uses the same technology. For now, Sprint is using WiMax technology for its 4G service. But the Overland Park-based carrier made clear last week that it’s long-term plans call for a move to LTE. Its WiMax rollout has been stalled for almost a year because 4G partner Cleawire Corp. has run short of cash.

Verizon said it currently sells 13 devices that can use its 4G service. It said the 4G coverage will reach across most of Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., and most of the suburbs. It’s also promising service at Kansas City International Airport, the Truman Sports Complex and Kansas Speedway.
