Sellout crowd fills Verizon Center to see Heat
Friday night at the Verizon Center was the Wizards first sellout of the season, as approximately 20,282 fans showed up in downtown Washington D.C. to see the Wizards play the Miami Heat.
But judging by the number of black jerseys and T-shirts with the number six, and “James” emblazoned on the back, it was pretty clear than many of the fans showed up to see the visitors from South Beach, namely LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
Every time James touched the ball, a smattering of boos could be heard from Wizards fans. But every time James hit a shot, just as many cheers could be heard. The crowd got what they paid for, on two jaw-dropping Wade to James alley-oop passes from slam dunks, and a 360-degree Wade spin move for a dunk that made the Wizards defenders look like traffic cones — just a bunch of stationary targets.
“They’ re a great defensive team,” John Wall said.
“That’s why they were in the finals. They just stopped us down the stretch, and they made plays. We couldn’t get it going offensively, turned the ball over, shot clock violation, taking bad shots, and they just increased their lead.”
The Wizards kept the game close through three quarters, but at any moment, it seemed as though the Heat were just laying low and getting ready to take over, which it did in the final quarter, and won the game 106-89.
The Wizards will begin a five-game road trip, beginning with the Detroit Pistons on Sun., Jan. 12.
