The 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count takes place Friday through Monday.

The annual four-day event engages birdwatchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where birds are across the U.S. and Canada. Participants count birds for as little as 15 minutes on one or more days of the event and report their sightings online.

In 2011, a record 60,000 citizen scientists filed 11.4 million bird observations on 596 species.

For details on the GBBC and instructions for online reporting, visit www.birdcount.org. The site has regional bird checklists and forms for birdwatchers to complete during the bird count.

Last year, GBBC participants reported a surprising increase in the number of evening grosbeaks — the highest number of observations ever for this species during the count. Until last year, the past 20 years of data have shown sharp declines in evening grosbeaks.

The Lahontan Audubon Society is encouraging local volunteers to count birds during the 2012 GBBC. For more information on local species or to become involved in the local birding group, visit www.nevadaaudubon.org.

Galena Creek counting party

Galena Creek Park is hosting an organized event for the Great Backyard Bird Count from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday.

A group will take a short hike and will stop for 10 minutes to count birds sighted. Upon return to the visitor center, the group will add its numbers to the national database. Registration is required, and participants should bring binoculars. Suggested donation is $5 per person.
