Droney powers CM past St. John’s Prep




Matt Droney pumped in 26 points while Gerard Adams shot 8-of-9 from the field en route to 16 points to help host Catholic Memorial (8-1) get a leg up in the Catholic Conference with an 89-64 victory over St. John’s Prep last night.

The Eagles (7-2) were led by Freddy Shove, who posted a game-high 29 points with 13 rebounds.

Elsewhere in the Catholic Conference, Jameilen Jones had 16 points and Oderah Obukwelu added 15 as BC High rolled to a 78-49 win over Malden Catholic.

Senior Michael Thorpe scored 24 points to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau and lead Newton North (8-0) to a 60-46 win against Bay State Conference foe Brookline.

Gabe Viera (23 points), Wesley Ogevebon (24) and Joseph Farrell (21) led the way for O’Bryant, which survived four overtimes to upend Burke, 90-84. . . . Elsewhere in Boston City League action, Ishiah Colemen buried 28 points and ripped down 22 rebounds to shoot New Mission (6-3) to a 74-59 besting of CASH. . . . Marquis Lewis led four in double figures with 19 points as Boston English (5-3) slipped past West Roxbury, 64-57. . . . Nick Simpson had 26 points and 11 rebounds while Theo Oribhaber added 18 points and eight boards to lead Brighton past Dorchester, 81-59.

Sonny Mojica erupted for 30 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as Chelsea (4-4) handed Whittier its first loss, 62-50, in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference.

Girls basketball

Alana Gilmer scored 11 of her 17 points during a big third quarter that allowed Archibishop Williams to a turn a two-point halftime lead into a 63-42 rout of Arlington Catholic. Sara Ryan added 16 points and eight steals for the Archies.

In the Boston City League, Trayana Mair poured in 31 points and Rohnda Fenton battled for 19 rebounds to lead Boston English (4-3) to a 61-57 victory over West Roxbury. . . . Shantal Solomon put down 17 points and Amy Bernardez fought for 19 rebounds to give Brighton (5-3) a 48-25 defeat of Dorchester.
