CES 2012: AT&T Takes on Verizon with LTE Devices
ATT unveiled six LTE devices it plans to launch this year, as the carrier bolsters its lineup to compete against Verizon.
The Dallas, Texas-based carrier will be the only place to buy the Sony Xperia Ion, the manufacturer’s first LTE device. The handset will feature a 12-megapixel camera and a 4.6-inch display. A LTE version of Samsung’s Galaxy Note tablet-smartphone hybrid device will also come to ATT, along with an updated version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD.
ATT will also have the exclusive on the HTC Titan 2, the first-ever LTE powered Windows Phone. The device features a 1.5-gigahertz processor, 4.7-inch screen and a 16-megapixel camera capable of 720p video.
ATT plans to make the announced devices available in the next few weeks, as well as other LTE devices at very consumer-friendly price ranges. The LTE-capable Samsung Exhilarate and Pantech Burst, for example, will be available for under $50 later this year.
Pantech will also manufacture the Element for ATT, a waterproof, high-speed tablet, with an 8-inch display that runs Android Honeycomb and sells within the $200 range.
The launch of so many LTE devices on ATT’s network makes the carrier’s catalog of smartphones look more comparable to its main competition. Verizon has several 4G LTE devices available on its service for the past several months, becoming as a key selling point against ATT.
Verizon’s 4G network may still be more impressive than the competition, but the release of so many high-speed devices at ATT shows the company is beginning to close the gap. The low prices of the Exhilarate and Burst will likely help ATT sell several devices and allow the company to compare its sales numbers with Verizon’s, which offers most of its LTE handsets for $200 or higher.
ATT is still building its LTE offerings to go up against Verizon, but this announcement of high-speed devices is one of the biggest steps the carrier has taken toward leveling the playing field.
