Verizon Drops $2 Fee Plan after Customer Backlash

Like us on Facebook

Verizon did listen. And it is watching. When reached by phone, Verizon Wireless representative Howard Waterman said the statement would speak for the company, but he added he was following the Twitter comments and that they were “interesting.”

One commenter on Twitter, Enrique Ortegon (@EOrtegon), said the change in direction by Verizon Wireless showed the “power of customers going social.” Another commenter, Steve Caulk (@srcaulk), questioned the company’s decision in the first place: “They didn’t see the public backlash coming?” he asked.

That backlash also took shape in the form of online petitions, most notably on Change.org, the site that has become a haven for consumers protesting against large corporations. In November, a petition started by Molly Katchpole of Washington helped lead the Bank of America Corp. to cancel a planned $5 fee for customers using debit cards. The same month, a petition was launched by Target Corp. employees, who were upset with the company’s decision to extend working hours on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. That didn’t have the same effect, but more than 200,000 disgruntled workers signed the petition, which spurred other copycat petitions against corporations such as Best Buy Co. Inc.

On Thursday, Katchpole started another petition — this time against Verizon Wireless. By the time the company announced it had reversed course, the petition had already garnered more than 100,000 signatures. In addition to signing the petition, some customers noted they were thinking of switching wireless carriers and worried that other carriers might follow Verizon’s lead.

“Ridiculous to charge a fee for online bill paying … we should be receiving a discount for paying online,” wrote petition signee Barb Maurais.

The backlash also reared its ugly head, somewhat embarrassingly, on Verizon Wireless forums on its own Web site. One thread, the title of which, in part, said it was “time to switch,” was full of comments by heated customers.

“Just foolish. I can guarantee Verizon one thing. I will NEVER pay a fee in order to pay my bill. ’Convenience Fee?!?!?!’  The name suggests that it’s not convenient for customers to pay Verizon for their service. I can solve that by not paying my bill and switching to Cox cable when my bundle package ends in 6 months. In the meantime, I will now be mailing in my payments to Verizon, because we all know it’s a lot less expensive for Verizon to have a staff of people to open the mail and process the checks,” wrote user “Chops.”

On Friday, the FCC also got involved, saying it would look into the proposed fee. “On behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter,” the FCC said in a statement.

The public-relations debacle came in a month that already has seen customers become frustrated with network outages. Now, Verizon Wireless will be attempting to avoid customer losses because even the company’s consideration of the fee has left some of them looking to flee.

“I can’t wait until my contract expires with Verizon. You have lost a once loyal customer and you will get no more of my money,” said LaShawn Hill, who signed the Change.org petition.

Verizon gets the message, drops new fee to pay bill

Verizon Wireless bowed to a torrent of criticism Friday and reversed a day-old plan to impose a $2 bill-paying fee that would have applied to some customers.

The consumer vitriol, which cascaded across Twitter and onto blogs and petitions all around the Web, struck a chord with a company that was clearly not expecting it.

“The company made the decision in response to customer feedback about the plan, which was designed to improve the efficiency of those transactions,” Verizon Wireless said in a statement referring to the reversal.

That a company with revenue of $15 billion in the most recent quarter would have to quickly change course over such a small fee suggests something particular about its business and others like it.

Similar to fee-bedeviled airline passengers with little choice on nonstop flights, or bank customers who do not want to spend hours untangling automated payments so they can switch institutions, Verizon Wireless customers have limited options because they are locked into multiyear contracts. And they apparently did not like being told it would cost money to pay money to the company.

The consumer outcry may also reflect the national mood – and some companies’ misreading of it, according to some analysts.

“I just think people are sick of being nickeled and dimed by big companies,” said Edgar Dworsky, founder of ConsumerWorld.org. “And it’s just baffling to me why a company like Verizon Wireless or Bank of America doesn’t do market testing on something like this first. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that there is going to be a backlash.”

What was surprising about the Verizon Wireless rollback was how quickly it occurred. It took consumers about a month to persuade Bank of America to rescind its plan to charge a $5 monthly fee to people who used their debit card for purchases.

With Verizon Wireless, the change of heart took only a day, even though it is the week after Christmas when companies often drop bad news in the hope that fewer people are paying attention.

“The multiplication effect with things like Twitter is incredible,” said Ron Shevlin, senior analyst at the Aite Group in Boston. “And because of the national mood, it hits the boiling point really quickly.”

Verizon Wireless also may been have moved to change its mind when the Federal Communications Commission put out word Friday that it thought the company’s actions merited closer scrutiny.

If the company had taken a different tack, it might have convinced consumers that some kind of fee increase was necessary, Shevlin said. “The easy thing would have been to be more explicit about what the costs were that were causing it to add this fee,” he said.

The company, for instance, might have explained how few people were going to pay the fee, which was supposed to be for one-time credit or debit card payments by phone or on the company’s website. It also could have explained how much higher the costs were, on a percentage basis, to accept payments in that way, vs. regular monthly credit card billing, which would have remained free.

Verizon Wireless declined a request for much of this information Thursday and did not respond to follow-up requests Friday.

Verizon Backs Down From Plans To Charge $2 For Online, Phone Payments

The window of a Verizon store in Los Angeles.

Update at 3:30 p.m. ET. Verizon Backs Down:

Verizon has backed down from plans to charge $2 for using some methods of payment.

The company made its announcement hours after the FCC said it would investigate the charges and after angry customers took to the web to vent their frustration.

In a statement Verizon said it decided to scrap the new charge “in response to customer feedback.”

“At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers,” Dan Mead, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, said in a statement. “Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.”

Hours earlier, the company defended its new policy. In an interview with Bloomberg, Brenda Raney, a Verizon spokeswoman, said the company wasn’t “considering canceling the charges.”

“Customers have a number of alternatives to pay their bill and not incur the convenience fee,” Raney told Bloomberg. “Paying the fee is an option, not an absolute.”

But, now, Verizon has reversed course, like Bank of America did after customers voiced their displeasure with a new $5 charge for using a debit card.

Our Original Post Continues:

There’s been an “uproar on the Web,” as The New York Times says this morning, over the plan by Verizon Wireless to charge $2 for some methods of paying your bill.

Indeed, a simple Twitter search of “Verizon” turns up words such as “backlash,” “OUTRAGEOUS,” and “Cancel your contract!” And there’s the inevitable online petition.

As Eyder reported Thursday, Verizon plans to start charging the fee if you go online or call the company on the phone to make a one-time payment with a credit or debit card. What Verizon is trying to do is steer customers toward signing up to pay their bills via electronic checks, through automatic payment programs or the old-fashioned way — by dropping a check in the mail.

Forbes contributor Erika Morphy thinks this will be a “Bank of America moment” for Verizon. That is, it will be faced with so much criticism that it will have to reverse course — as Bank of America did when it tried to charge a $5 monthly fee if its customers used their debit cards to make some purchases.

Verizon calls it a “convenience fee” that “will help allow us to continue to support these single bill payment options in these channels and is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make single bill payments in alternate payment channels (online, mobile, telephone).”

The company’s plan comes as some customers are already upset about recent outages in its 4G network.

Verizon Wireless Ditches Plan for $2 ‘Convenience’ Fee

Amidst backlash from consumers and the possibility of a Federal Communications Commission investigation, Verizon Wireless said Friday afternoon that it will not charge consumers a $2 fee for one-time bill payments online and by phone.

Verizon said yesterday that it would impose a $2 “convenience fee” for one-time credit and debit card payments made online and on the phone. The fees, which were scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 15, were intended to “improve the efficiency of those transactions.”

The fee would not have applied to those who signed up for Auto Pay, which makes automatic monthly payments via a major credit or debit card on the same day every month, or when your account reaches a specific dollar amount. With Verizon, the minimum payment is $15 and the max is $250.

Other ways to avoid the $2 fee included: using an electronic check, which will pull the funds directly from your bank account; paying online via your bank’s bill pay site; going to a Verizon Store; using a Verizon gift, rebate, or friends and family referral card; or mailing a paper check.

Customers were not pleased, however, with many hitting back in the comments section of PCMag’s story.

“OMG !!!! Unbelievable! I’m already paying over $200.00 per month (have been for years) and they want to squeeze even more money out of me?! This is total robbery!” wrote one user.

“This is silly. Most businesses want you to pay online because it’s less costly than a person opening checks. Besides, who in their right mind would allow a cell phone company to automatically deduct your bill when half the time the bill is wrong?” wrote another.

Earlier today, before Verizon dropped plans for the fee, the FCC said it would investigate the plan.

“On behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter,” an FCC spokesman said.

According to ATT’s Web site, the provider does not charge users for one-time online payments, but users who pay by phone or go to a “payment location” might be charged an unspecified convenience fee.

Sprint does not list any payment restrictions, but members with Account Spending Limits (ASL)—or a maximum amount your account can accrue based on credit history, payment history, or fraud-related incidents—are charged a $4.99 per month fee unless they enroll in automatic bill pay.

T-Mobile does not list any payment restrictions.

Verizon Drops Plan for $2 Fee on Some Bill Payments

Brian Snyder/ReutersCustomers at a Verizon Wireless store in Boston.

4:05 p.m. | Updated Adding background and analyst comment.

In a remarkably swift reversal, Verizon Wireless has canceled plans to impose a $2 “convenience fee” on some bill payments, just a day after announcing the new policy.

The company said in a statement that it was dropping the plan in light of customer feedback.

“Verizon Wireless has decided it will not institute the fee for online or telephone single payments that was announced earlier this week,” it said. “The company made the decision in response to customer feedback about the plan, which was designed to improve the efficiency of those transactions. The company continues to encourage customers to take advantage of the numerous simple and convenient payment methods it provides.”

Objections to the fee came fast and furious, and highlighted just how quickly things race around the feedback loop now, even when a company attempts to deliver the bad news during what is supposed to be a slow news week when fewer people are paying attention.

The commentary appeared first on Twitter, where many people mistakenly believed that it would be applied to all credit and debit card payments for Verizon products. Instead it was meant to apply to one-time payments that Verizon Wireless customers made via phone or on the company’s Web sites.

Some people started petitions on the same Web site where a similar campaign helped convince Bank of America to rescind its now infamous $5 monthly debit card fee. Many others insisted that they would switch to paper billing, in effect to punish the company for its actions by finding the most cost-consuming way to pay their bills each month that did not require them to pay a fee.

Consumer advocates, like Edgar Dworsky, a lawyer who runs the Web site Consumer World, began the morning vowing to investigate whether Verizon Wireless’s fee violated the terms of its merchant agreement and federal laws that limit card surcharges.

And later in the day, the Federal Communications Commission said it was planning to question Verizon about the new policy, saying it was “concerned about Verizon’s actions.

At which point the company had apparently had enough. A Verizon Wireless spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Verizon: Recent 4G LTE outages are ‘growing pains’

Samsung Galaxy Nexus, a 4G LTE phone available on Verizon

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network, normally known for its speed and stability, has had a rough time this month with three nationwide outages.

So what’s the problem? Well, according to Verizon, this is all just some “growing pains.”

“The Verizon Wireless 4GLTE Network is BY FAR the largest and the most advanced 4GLTE wireless network in the world,” Verizon said in a statement posted to its website. “It is available in 190 US markets and covers more than 200 million people, providing the fastest 4G Network in the U.S.”

Currently, only Verizon and ATT are the only major wireless carriers in the U.S. with active 4G networks, and ATT’s 4G LTE network is much smaller.

Sprint is in the early stages of building up its 4G LTE network and T-Mobile will follow soon as well.

“Being a pioneer comes with growing pains,” Verizon said. “The recent issues that affected our customers’ 4G LTE service were unforeseen despite careful, diligent planning, deployment and ongoing upgrade programs.

“Problems customers experienced affected connectivity to the 4G LTE Network and data service. Several times, we have proactively ‘moved’ 4GLTE customers onto our 3G Network to ensure all would have a data connection. For brief periods, such as on Wednesday (12/28), 4G LTE customers could not connect to the 3G Network as quickly as we would have liked.”

Verizon, the nation’s largest wireless carrier with about 90 million customers, also estimated that the outages resulted in its network being in service about 99% of the time this year.

“Each incident has been different from a technical standpoint,” Verizon said, failing to go into detail about just what has been the cause of the outages over the last four weeks. “Our engineers have successfully diagnosed those past triggering events, and they have not re-occurred. We also work diligently to rectify technical problems in the network before they affect any customers.”

Why A Customised SLA Agreement Is Necessary For Managed Hosting

When you are preparing for an expansion of your business to include an enhanced or new online presence, it is important to know why custom SLA is important for managed hosting services. The Service Level Agreement is the defined level of provided service that the business can expect from the service provider. It is also the definition of components of service that the client will be expected to provide. Each determination is carefully spelled out so that both parties understand fully the rights and responsibilities.

The agreement defines the connectivity for the network. This includes the speed of connection that the client has the right to expect. It also binds the provider to the amount and speed that must be provided by the host equipment. This allows performance to be measured easily as a component of determining whether or not the specifications of the agreement have been met.

It is certain that in any venue, equipment becomes obsolete or wears out during usage. This is no less true of managed dedicated servers equipment. The agreement should spell out the age at which equipment must be replaced, how long it will take for preparation and replacement. The agreement must also deal with drastic changes in technology that make the equipment obsolete before it has completed its expected useful life.

The server provider is expected to perform ongoing monitoring of a system and avoid server downtime. The client must be able to depend on the system being available during specified periods. At the same time, it is expected that there will be periods on a regular basis when the server must be down for scheduled maintenance. Typically this will be during hours of low usage. If there is emergency maintenance needed, the agreement will spell out a response time and what will be the results of noncompliance with the terms of a contract.

The provider must have availability of administration. For clients, the ability to reach someone during certain specified hours is important. Configuration of each system is stated, including network maintenance and implementation, file system setup and configuration of a remote printer capability. The operating system user administration is a part of an overall system. Installation of hardware, and installation and maintenance of the power distribution system and the console access system are directed. The installation of applications and the operating system is part of the stated administrative tasks.

he provider is responsible for supplying the level of services and storage that will allow for the smooth operation of all aspects of the systems. The server has to contain enough storage for the operating system, application software and for backup systems needed by the customer. Sometimes, the client will need extra data storage that is outside the standard systems needs.

Typically, any applications hosted on the server defined in the agreement is the responsibility of the customer. The systems administrator will work with the staff of the client to install the software, but will not be responsible for its regular administration and operation. Any upgrades or enhancements must be the responsibility of the client and the software vendor

Some of the reasons why custom SLA is important for managed hosting include clarity in interactions between clients and service providers. Defining expectations is important for both sides. A smoothly functioning system benefits both client and provider.

The requirements of a business owner are generally far larger compared to any employee who has a job. Most men and women have a job allowing them to pay their expenditures, buy food and water, pay the mortgage etc. but becoming a entrepreneur is unique. You will need something to drive you to keep working because there is no-one telling you what to do, it’s all you!

It’s beneficial to have a “why” which often offers you determination in the great times and poor times that you will undergo being a Team Beachbody Coach. Before you enroll, you’ll want to write down “why” you’re going to start this unique business. Maybe you simply enjoy helping individuals be in good shape, want to make a higher paycheck or you’re fed up with working for someone else, having a “why” is vital. The truth is, I’d personally go as far as to imply that you just wont make it as a Team Beachbody Coach without this, it’s that significant!

Who Is Team Beachbody?

Team Beachbody got its start in 1999 when co-founders Jon Congdon and Carl Daikeler of L . A ., California thought to build a workout small business. Little did the know this small business would turn out to be the greatest in-home physical fitness training sensation in the world within the years to come.

Beachbody is exclusive because they were the first wellness and fitness company to adopt an mlm business model with the release of Team Beachbody in 2007. Previous to this unveiling the company’s main promoting and marketing was performed by means of commercials which aired on late night Television.

In my opinion, Team Beachbody offers an amazing opportunity since they lead the home fitness business. Due to their tv commercials and now the “Team Beachbody Coach” plan, the Beachbody Company is a household brand name.

Team Beachbody Solutions

Team Beachbody has has totally changed how individuals become and stay in good shape with their in-home workout videos and amazing line of supplements. Pretty much nothing sells greater than results, and it’s hard to switch on the tv or explore the net with out going to “before and after” photos of men and women flaunting what Beachbody is capable of doing.

Having said that, I don’t believe there is certainly any doubt that the products and solutions Team Beachbody sells are legitimate and successful.

Here is a list of some of their best-sellers:

P90X: A 90 day workout program developed by Tony Horton to improve one’s body into the best form of your life possible.

Insanity: This intense training collection is a product of Shaun T which is said to be probably the most extreme, fat reduction, muscle tissue building videos Beachbody provides. This is for people who aren’t afraid of a little blood, sweat and tears, not to mention agony.

Brazil Butt Lift: For anybody seeking to have that “perfect” back side this video is for them. Leandro Carvalho is known for assisting girls narrow hips, slender up those upper thighs and lift some “booty” as a result of his “TriAngle Training” strategies.

Team Beachbody|Income Opportunity Beachbody Can You Make Money As A Team Beachbody Coach?

Most of the people get started to be a Team Beachbody Coach due to the fact that they need to make money right!? After I examined the Beachbody pay plan I became genuinely in shock with the income possibilities up for grabs.

Its outrageous that the compensation plan is packed with 8 different revenue sources, but the corporation actually devotes more than $100,000,000 a year in advertising that generates revenue if you’re a Team Beachbody Coach.

Just like any network marketing business, as a Beachbody Coach you will have the capability to advance to higher position levels that contribute to making more money. The first position everyone starts at is Team Beachbody Coach, and then Emerald Coach, Ruby Coach, and the top rank is Diamond Coach.

When you join as a Team Beachbody Coach you’re provided an online store where shoppers might buy Beachbody training programs and nutritional products from you which generates a 25% commission. You’re also compensated when you sponsor other Team Beachbody coaches into the business.

So Is Team Beachbody A Scam?

There are actually numerous scams out there today so it’s crucial to be sure you’re certainly not throwing money away by joining the newest pyramid scheme. Beachbody is a network marketing or direct selling company and many men and women instantly presume it’s a scam.

I’d want to address this topic and provide you with my opinion in regards to the validity of the business opportunity as a Team Beachbody Coach. When studying opportunities online it’s simple to find reviews of individuals being cheated and Beachbody is no different. Sadly, many of these claims against Beachbody are false and deceptive.

Several of these claims come from former Team Beachbody coaches that thought that they were ripped off because they didn’t make any money.

Individuals who fall short as a Beachbody Coach lack 2 skills that all network marketers have to have if they want to be productive in this industry: Sales skills and recruiting or sponsoring skills.

Let’s face it, if you can’t market the Team Beachbody items you’re not going to make much money. Network marketing is centered on leveraged income which essentially implies earning income from the work of other people and you do this by building a team.  With out this leveraged team working for you your income will depend on solely on the efforts of yourself. If you’re looking over this write-up, I don’t think you’re serious about being a Beachbody salesperson the rest of your life and I don’t fault you for that.7

The challenge most Beachbody coaches are confronted with is how to sponsor additional coaches into the business. You may talk to your close friends but what should you do once you exhaust connections to talk with? This is a Serious problem because if you can’t create a team of additional Beachbody coaches you’re earnings potential will be considerably constrained.

There Is Great News

What if one could have leads getting in touch with you concerning your Team Beachbody business? How do you think that would affect your ability to succeed as a Beachbody Coach?

The good news is there is a solution to “attract” individuals to you by utilizing the power of the web and a Secret marketing strategy called “attraction marketing“.

Similiar to a Team Beachbody Coach, I also mentor individuals how to get leads, revenue and recruit business partners by establishing and applying these “attraction marketing” rules.

If you desire to discover the way to become a leader as a Team Beachbody Coach, generate 20-30 targeted leads a day online, and become a prospecting machine I want to invite you to my personal attraction marketing educating website. Just click here to go there now.

Picking A Domain Name That Most Suits Your Company

Domains are a critical component of any business no matter what the industry, products or services being sold. The main goal of a catchy URL is to have potential customers find you quickly with as little effort as possible to give you the most profits.

Domain registration should ideally be the name of the business. For example, if the business is called Pets Unlimited, then the most suitable URL would be petsunlimited.com. If that is already taken, you have a couple of choices: Change the name of the business, or choose another URL. Usually, choosing another URL is much more efficient.

Another thing to consider when choosing a domain name is the length. Generally, the shorter the name is the better. It should not be too short though, that it loses its meaning. Besthosting.com is much simpler to remember than thebesthostingplanontheplanet.com.

Deciding on whether or not to use a hyphen should also be considered. These can be confusing and tricky, as most people do not think of hyphens when they are typing in a URL. Consider using myspecialweddingday.com instead of my-special-wedding-day.com.

Domain names with correct spelling are critical to the success of any business. If the name has any easily misspelled words (think centre/center, theater/theatre, practice/practice, etc.) you may be losing business and profits. They may be typing in a URL with one spelling, but you have it spelled the other way. The simple fix for this is to register both spelling variations and use one as a redirect to your main website.

Choosing extensions should also be considered. The . Com extensions are the most popular but there are other alternatives that are becoming increasingly popular as well, such as . Biz, . Org and . Net. Whichever one you choose, make sure you include the extension name on all of your advertising and marketing materials. If you do not, people may assume a . Com extension and go to the wrong website. This could mean lost profits and lost customers for your business.

Domain names are a direct reflection of the type of business you have and the selection of services and products you provide. The person typing in the URL into the search engine needs to understand its meaning. If your URL is dailycalendars.com and you only sell magazines, you are completely misleading your visitors with inappropriate naming. That could also get you into some trouble with online watchdog groups or even the BBB.

There is a lot to consider when choosing the proper URL for your business. Ideally, you want it to be the same as your business name but that is not always possible. Spelling, extensions, length, and whether or not to use hyphens are all important things to keep in mind. Coming up with a catchy, appropriate title is critical to the success of your online business. Once it has been chosen and registered, it is very difficult to change and may confuse your customers, which means less income for you. Take some time to think carefully and select with care.
