Things To Ask A New Managed Hosting Services Business

A website needs a hosting provider to enable visitors to access and make use of it. Different hosts offer varying service levels based on how they run their business. Managed server services providers provide a service that users can scale depending on their requirements. It is however necessary to ask a few questions in order to get a more clear picture of what is on offer.

A very critical quality of a good host is having reliable managed servers. Reliability is key to ensure that a site is available when visitors come along. If they were to visit and the site is unavailable, they are unlikely to come back. Moreover, their trust level will likely be eroded. A good provider should guarantee a high enough up time for the service.

A system can however breakdown and fail to function as required. A provider should be able to tell how fast such a problem can be attended to when it occurs. Ideally, they should get to the problem fast and work on it until it is solved. Another query that requires an answer is whether they can handle the problem themselves without involving the site owner.

Some of the common failures can be eliminated by employing enough system resources to cater for the demand. Having suitable hardware can help reduce the basic problems that reduce reliability. By employing fault tolerant systems, the up time provided can be more quantifiable. Additional communication channels for example, help reduce reliability on one channel which improves overall performance.

The choice of software used can also impact the functions that may be performed on any system. Depending on what the provider opts to use, there may be restrictions on how operations are handled. The operating system is one of the determining factors since all the other functions rely on it. A question pertaining to the other available software or services is necessary to facilitate better planning.

The nature of control panels in use is worth knowing to find out what they are capable of. By identifying the available qualities, a site owner is then able to plan ahead. Some additional software or functions may be bundled in the offer as bonuses. This may come in handy for crucial tasks that are required to keep the system running smoothly. Backups are, for example, needed to keep sites protected against data loss.

In case of a website failure, such information is restored quickly and the business continues as usual. Finding hosts who are willing to backup and restore information is an added advantage. One ought to ask if there are any extras like email functionality, that have not been named but are probably offered as a bonus. Other functions are only offered on request and it is important to ask in order to take advantage of them.

Managed hosting services providers have differing offers which one can choose from. Some of these are common to many, but others are unique to a few. Asking questions is one of the quick ways to get all the necessary information about the host. By requesting for more advanced offers, a webmaster can get a more suitable product.

Milan reach Coppa semis

AC Milan recovered from an early deficit to secure their place in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia with a 3-1 win over Lazio at the San Siro.

Lazio had won four of their five previous ties with Milan in the Coppa and it looked like being another good night for the Rome side when Djibril Cisse put them ahead inside the opening five minutes.

However, within 13 minutes of that goal Lazio were trailing as Robinho (15) and Clarence Seedorf (18) netted in quick succession for the hosts.

Milan substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic then added a third goal six minutes from time to seal the win and earn his side a mouthwatering semi-final showdown with Serie A title rivals Juventus.

The other semi-final pits Napoli against Siena.

The FCC is dragging its feet on wireless spectrum, says AT&T

Echoing the sentiments of its competitors, ATT today discussed the growing need for more wireless spectrum in the US and criticized the FCC’s inability to open up more spectrum, in its fourth quarter earnings call.

ATT CEO Randall Stephenson said the wireless industry is in the midst of tremendous growth, but “this growth cannot continue without more spectrum being cleared and brought to market.” He pointed out that the last big spectrum auction by the FCC was five years ago and that it seems like the agency is delaying its efforts to free up more spectrum.

“It appears the FCC is intent on picking winners and losers rather than letting the market work,” Stephenson said.

Strong words against the FCC aren’t unusual for mobile carriers, but I also got the sense that ATT is particularly ticked off this time around given the agency’s hand in killing the T-Mobile merger, which cost the company $4 billion during the last quarter.

To deal with the massive increase in mobile data growth, Stephenson said, ATT will “manage usage-based data plans, increased pricing and managing the speeds of the highest volume users.” The company should still be able to continue its LTE rollout with its current spectrum, and Stephenson noted that the technology is 30-40 percent more efficient than 3G. But he added, “LTE is important, but it is not the silver bullet in terms of capacity planning. What that means is that to meet customer demand we need to continue our spectrum push.”

“We have an industry clearly stuck in creating capacity,” Stephenson said. “Clearly it’s time for Congress and the FCC to step up.”

VB Mobile SummitVentureBeat is holding its second annual Mobile Summit this April 2-3 in Sausalito, Calif. The invitation-only event will debate the five key business and technology challenges facing the mobile industry today, and participants — 180 mobile executives, investors, and policymakers — will develop concrete, actionable solutions that will shape the future of the mobile industry. You can find out more at our Mobile Summit site.

American Tower Outlook Dims With AT&T’s Plans

After listening to the ATT (T) and Crown Castle (CCI) conference calls today, I have the following observations. These are in addition to my other recent notes on American Tower (AMT).

DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) – The Panacea for Spectrum issues?

ATT did not mince words this morning to convey their disdain of what Randall Stephenson called of the “Current FCC.” With the current non-business friendly decisions and seemingly arbitrary requirements the FCC has recently demonstrated, it seemed quite clear to me that ATT had lost any hope of securing any meaningful spectrum with the current approval process.

Distributed Antenna systems are currently available and are vastly easier to deploy than traditional cell towers. All that is required is power and an internet connection. They are cheap and unobtrusive. Crown Castle provided some pictures of recent installations. American Tower has chosen not to focus on DAS, in my opinion to their peril.

Yes there is a cellular antenna in there somewhere…

ATT was very clear of the direction it is heading. The important point he makes is that this is not theoretical, or dependant on some new techological development. This is here right now and is being deployed. This makes traditional towers less valuable. Randall Stephenson, ATT CEO, stated on Jan. 26:

We continue to go very, very aggressively on distributed antenna system solutions and so going inside of buildings and lighting up buildings from the inside,WiFi solutions, all of these we just continue and there’s no new science here per se. Obviously additional spectrum where we can pick it up is another part of the equation. And so you will continue to see us be aggressive there.

Also during the same comment he was very clear about the trends underway by wireless companies to decrease their use of traditional cell towers with their base stations and backhaul issues:

Wireless companies are buying Ethernet to the cell site aggressively, as we told you.

We now have 80% of our mobile broadband traffic on native Ethernet. All mobile companies are trying to get there as fast as they can. We think we’re way ahead of the game in this regard. The benefits from it are dramatic in terms of the throughput increases you see by getting that backhaul infrastructure in place on Ethernet. So we are seeing big opportunities there.

The point that Mr. Stephenson is making is that once a wireless company has Ethernet to the cell site, it is no longer dependent upon the tower owner to locate large base station equipment at the tower site. This is horrible news for American Tower.

Unfortunately the bad news does not end with ATT. American Tower’s other cornerstone customer Sprint (S) is accelerating its deployment of “Network Vision,” which embodies much of this movement away from traditional towers. This is what Sprint has to say about towers going forward( from the Sprint Network Vision Information Center):

On Oct. 7, 2011, Sprint announced its plans to accelerate deployment of Network Vision and its plans to roll out 4G LTE on its 1.9 GHz licensed spectrum. Sprint expects the rapid deployment to reach 250 million people by the end of 2013.

Sprint estimates the total net financial benefit over a seven-year period will be between $10 billion and $11 billion.

Cost savings are expected to come from capital efficiencies, reducing energy costs, lowering roaming expenses, backhaul savings and the eventual reduction in the total number of cell sites.

I estimate that the amount of intangible assets that AMT currently attributes to “Customer Relationships” is over a billion dollars. Overall AMT has intangible assets in excess of its equity. With customers like Sprint and ATT outlining thier future plans so clearly, AMT’s management is not listening.

How is this good for AMT?

Images from Sprint.

AMT has gone to great lengths to portray itself as a real estate-oriented company, culminating in its recent transformation into a Real Estate Investment Trust. The value of real estate is completely dependant on what you can charge a tenant to use it. DAS/Network Vision, or any other form of technology which reduces the reliance upon a cell tower, is necessairly a problem for a company like AMT.

Disclosure: I am short AMT. I have negative net delta options positions in AMT.

Verizon, others, invest in video tech company Skyfire

Wed Jan 25, 2012 7:49pm IST

REUTERS – The venture arm of Verizon Communications Inc and others have invested $8 million in video technology company Skyfire, which plans to expand into European and Asian markets.

The other investors are Lightspeed Venture Partners, Matrix Partners and Trinity Ventures.

California-based Skyfire, best known for its mobile browser, helps operators handle the surging demand for video on cellphones. It has now raised a total of $30.8 million, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Data growth on mobile networks is expected to rise almost 30-fold during next five years as consumers increasingly watch video on wireless devices.

“Wireless operators around the world are facing an explosion in mobile data on their networks, driven largely by mobile video,” Andrew Verhalen, general partner at Matrix Partners, said in a statement.

“Skyfire is well positioned with solutions for operators that can expand network capacity by over 25 percent, as well as generate incremental revenue.”

Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) released its fourth-quarter earnings statement today, and a quick look at its share price — dropping almost 3% in the first half-hour of the day — will tell you it wasn’t received well. But how bad could it really be? After all, it did show company-record quarterly revenue growth of 7.7% year-over-year.

First off, Verizon’s adjusted EPS (non-GAAP) of $0.52 for its consolidated operations is only a penny less than the estimate that Businessweek‘s poll of analysts came up with. But that EPS number is an adjustment upward to account for a $0.71-per-share loss the company took for non-cash pension items – that’s a serious impact.

Breaking Verizon’s earnings down into its two main segments, wireless and wireline, will give us a better picture of the quarter.

Wireless
Total operating revenues for Verizon Wireless for the quarter were $18.25 billion, an increase of 13% over the same quarter last year. That was helped by the net gain of 1.5 million retail subscribers, of which 1.2 million are the coveted postpaid (on contract) customer.

But in spite of those gains, operating income was down almost 11% over that same period. Some of this can be attributed to the substantial amount of the iPhone’s cost that Verizon – as well as ATT (NYSE: T  ) and Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S  ) — have to write off as a subsidy to lure iPhone-craving subscribers. The paradox here is that the more iPhones they sell, the thinner their operating margins becomem.

One thing to remember about the Verizon Wireless segment of Verizon is that it is a joint venture between Verizon  and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD  ) , with Verizon owning 55%. Verizon Wireless has generated enough cash that will payout a $10 billion dividend (split 55/45) this month to its parent companies.

Wireline
Verizon managed to slow down its rate of losing fixed-line phone customers, but it’s a growing problem area for all wireline providers as mobile phone users drop their home phone service. Although the company was able to post a net increase in FiOS Internet and video subscribers, total wireline operating revenues were down 1.5% over the same quarter last year, and down 1.3% year-over-year.

Bottom line
Even though Verizon disappointed the analysts, and in spite of its iPhone subsidy costs and wireline weakness, Verizon Wireless is still far ahead of all other wireless providers in 4G LTE coverage. It was also able to increase its wireless spectrum holdings, unlike rival ATT, which got itself stuck in a nine-month long regulatory quagmire in its quest to annex T-Mobile.

And don’t forget Verizon’s $0.50-per-share quarterly dividend (a projected 5.2% yield), which it is still in a strong position to pay with a free cash flow to dividend payout ratio of 41% for the year.

Remember, dividends provide a nice buffer for stock market volatility, but Verizon isn’t the only great dividend-payer out there. Business Coach: Drive Your Business Vision to Full Fruition

While there are some people who think that having a vision for your company or your small business is not always necessary, a seasoned business coach would beg to differ and tell you that having a vision is as important as any step that’s necessary to get to your success. Your vision should not just be about doing what you have to do in order to get to your goals, it’s all about building and determining what different strategies you need to do in order to get to that goal of yours.

It’s also about establishing where you are, mapping your direction and visualizing where you will be in 5, 10, 20 or maybe 50 years from now. It is fortunate that we have a trusted business coach who shared with us these tips:

Identify Who You Are And What You Intend To Do

Begin your vision with a clear description of the types of goods and services that your company has to offer. This is where goals are set, and deadlines or time frames provided. This is very useful in setting a clearer direction for your business undertaking.

Let us cite an illustration: supposing that you are just a newly-established logistics company. It is harder to convince clients that your services are way better than the competition, especially when you are just starting. You may start by informing them that it is your priority to get their goods safely and timely delivered. By confidently telling them that their goods will be left undamaged during delivery will ensure that more money will be saved and more profit will be acquired by their company.

Planning Strategically

To separate point A to point B, you must be able to identify the how to’s of being able to effectively provide quality service to your clients. It is essential to clearly answer each how-to query as this will significantly influence how every goal will be reached and how records will be broken.

These tactics do not need to be complex. Just focus on a particular goal and conceptualize all probable ways that you could think of in order for such goal to be reached. One good example of this is by creating a mailing list to keep your customers informed of your future events and upcoming products, or choosing a feasible location for your office which would attract more customers. These can all contribute to reaching your goal which is to target revenue within a certain period of time.

Goal Evaluation and Revision

Five or ten years from now you might have already met most of your goals. You may want to reassess your vision at this time. It may be advantageous for you to revise your goals a bit from time to time as you deem fit, taking note of every success (or failure) that happened as a result, no matter how big or little it was. Problems that were encountered should be addressed and should be learned from since this will contribute to your company’s success.

A reputable business Coach says that by doing all these, you are sure to have more gains than losses… more accolades than defeats.

AT&T Reports Mixed U-Verse Sub Momentum for Fourth Quarter

NEW YORK – Telecom giant ATT on Thursday reported mixed subscriber momentum at its U-Verse video service in the fourth quarter as it added more users than in the previous period, but fewer than in the year-ago period.

The company added 208,000 net subscribers in the latest quarter to bring its total to 3.8 million, compared with 246,000 in the year-ago period and 176,000 in the third quarter, which tends to be seasonally weaker.

Verizon earlier this week also reported higher subscriber additions for its FiOS TV service, which just like U-Verse competes with cable and satellite TV operators.

ATT’s total video subscribers, which combine the company’s U-verse and bundled satellite customers, reached 5.6 million at the end of the quarter, representing 23.9 percent of households served.

Following its failed bid for T-Mobile, ATT on Thursday also reported a loss of $6.7 billion for the fourth quarter, following a year-ago profit, as its results fell below Wall Street estimates in part due to costs related to the failed merger.

But the company also boasted its best-ever quarter for Android and Apple smartphones, including 7.6 million iPhone activations.
